Russ Johnson for School Board

Common sense solutions for the challenges we face!

meeting

My five common sense initiatives:

  1. Get politics out of the schools.
  2. Improve student achievement by refocusing our efforts on what used to be, and what still should be, our core mission of providing a rigorous academic based program of instruction.
  3. Get more parents involved and demand curriculum transparency.
  4. Get discipline under control so teachers can teach.
  5. Elect school board members who will serve in trust for the community, not the education bureaucracy.

Cecil County School Board Candidate

Other than the time I served as an infantry officer in the US Army, my wife Margi and I have been lifelong residents of Cecil County and both of us are graduates of CCPS; as are our two sons Clay and Dylan, who now live in the Denver, CO area. I went on to graduate from McDaniel College, spent 16 years as an executive for a national security firm, and am now the broker for My Real Estate GPS, a local real estate company.

High quality education is the key to opening the doors of opportunity for all our children, and to developing responsible and engaged citizens. As the dad of two students who have gone through CCPS, I know that good schools combine professional educators, engaged parents, and motivated students. Having lived in this community most of my life, coupled with a 57-year connection with our school system, I’m happy to report and confirm that here in Cecil County, we have awesome kids and world class teachers. The future of this community is contingent upon the success of those two groups of people, but our kids have fallen behind, and we must fix it. We need to look at the challenges we face from an analytical and logical perspective, then apply a big dose of common sense to the solutions.

The school board needs an independent, from outside the system, voice who will serve in trust for you, the community, not the education bureaucracy. I’m running to be that voice.

Issues

IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIVEMENT

  • Refocus our efforts on providing a rigorous, high standards based, academic program of instruction.
  • Utilize all resources available to bring the students who are behind up to grade level proficiency.
  • Hold all parties involved accountable for the achievement of those high standards.
Russ Johnson - Parents

GET PARENTS MORE INVOLVED

  • Protect parental rights
  • Insure curriculum transparency, to include the written curriculum (what you teach), resources and materials used, as well as the pedagogy (the way you teach).
  • Keep them informed about potential significant changes to the law or policy from the Federal and State level.

SERVE THE COMMUNITY NOT THE BUREAUCRACY

  • Be accountable to the citizens, as an elected official should.
  • Challenge the status quo.
  • Know that every decision must go through a common sense test.
